Pixel Penis Tote: work in progress

alright, so heres my plan:
ill be taking both my digital penis/ vagina images, pixelating them, then printing them onto tote bags! so from across the street, you'll see a massive penis bobbing along, but when youre close enough to talk to someone, itll just look like a bunch of squares and no ones the wiser. hilarious! first i gessoed and gridded a wood panel, then loosely block out the shapes with acrylic.

then just after i began painting i decided the resolution on my reference photo was too high. the penis was too easily distinguishable from across the room. where i was more intrigued by the interplay between wearer/ observer in a public setting, like down the sidewalk. so i started again with larger pixels. (also, legendary gay pornstar michael brandon says hi. hes part of another project im working on.)

at this point, 43 out of 289 squares have been coloured. by the time im done this ill be a paint mixing master!

ive had this little drawing done for a while, but just havnt had the time to post till now. hes the brother to my earlier vagina post. both of which are in the first steps of many in my greater toronto pride 2012 plans. so youll see more of these veiny, moist siblings soon.

(dont worry. this isnt a picture of my penis, its a frankenstein of 33 dicks)

here are some compositional sketches. after staring at so many penises for so long i sort of lost track of what was what. so i got my friends to vote. number three was a head above the rest.

i also forgot to take as many process screen shots but i think this gets the message across. and makes me seem very efficient.

happy new year everyone!
some times when life blueballs you from artistic relief, you end up exploding with great ideas.
and boy do i have some fun ideas in my balls- i mean brain...

this year im planning to grab myself a booth for Toronto Pride 2012 so for the next little bit ill making some really funny products and posting the progress here.

this is just a part of my grand master plan:
i drew a vagina for my lovely lesbian friends, all two of you. (hi penny! hi mylo!) im also currently taking requests for more lesbian friends, as i am waif-like i need many strong protectors.

now painting this vagina was a little tricky. first of all: i dont know if you guys know this about me, but im gay. i can send all day looking at sloppy rosebuds on the internet but when it comes to vaginas im lost. and google wasnt much help either cause i had no idea what i was looking at. is this a picture of an attractive vagina? or one with an std? (and im not saying your lady bits are gross, im saying i needed to do some homework). so i built a mini gallery of 24 girls, frankensteined them together and: tada!

side note: i always had an extra tab open with a cock as a safety blanket.

heres a little comic ive been working on for the last week. its just a little story about my first boyfriend and recalling the gratifying feeling you get when you tell the universe:

this was great fun to do it, but man, does paneling and sequencing take a lot of work!
i think ill screen print this and make it into little book.
recession tip:
this season save on expensive sponges/exfoliants and use your boyfriend's chest hair instead. boyfriends make the best loofahs. but if you cant find a boyfriend, prostitutes and the homeless are great alternatives.

today's post goes out to all my lady friends (you know, the ones ill never sleep with): Fag Hags!

this was the most time consuming image ive done for my thesis...yet...
the longer i worked on it, the more i realized how many elements i was going to be juggling, and how ambitious things were becoming.

Fag Hag: the female (usually heterosexual) platonic best friend of a homosexual male.

(heres also a handy dandy legend for all my non-LGBT friends to deciferpher the complex gay labeling system

bears: big, hairy, gay men.
gym bunnies: fit, body obsessed, gay men
polar bears: older, big, hairy, gay men
silver foxes: Anderson Cooper.
otters: skinny, hairy, gay men
sex pigs: kinky, fetish oriented, gay men

panda bears: big, hairy, asian, gay men)
this was where i was when i went in for my first critique...

and we came to the conclusion that what i had was too static and the entire composition needed to be rotated, to a 3/4's perspective...

omg. so. much. fun. i came up with what i thought were some hilarious initial concepts that halted the class and initiated a discussion on the legitimacy of my thesis and whether or not i had gone too far (love it! =D)

rosebud: the active ability to relax one’s rectum allowing a small portion of the lower colon to extend out of the body.
(often the result of extreme anal play. certain kink and fetish circles view rosebuds as points of praise and a testament to one's sexual virility/ expertise)

gosh darn it, i love how the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) community tries its very best to be as inclusive as it can. if you're two consenting, rational adults playing within the confines of your legal system:

hideous herbert
is an edition of handmade books recounting the tragic tale of an ugly caterpillar desperately awaiting to become a butterfly.

here is the sketch that started it all: (my friend, jackie, makes a guest appearance here and draws me a penis and a cake... Mmmmm penis)and going inside the envelope-pages from my previous post: are four chapters that also take the form of envelopes, but in origami form!

each reveals the narrative to the user as they unravel and going inside the origami-envelope-chapters will be a print of Herbert at the different stages of his life, ill make another post for that later.

working away on some mini envelops with a fancy new stamp set i got and some cool mossy inkpad then wrapping it all up

and just because: here is a picture of some apple crisps me and a friend made before it went into the oven. i didnt get to snap a cooked version because we ate it too quickly...

so here are my paintings i had showing for the Fat City WildCat party, contortions and glistening reflections.
i wanted to explore the notion of the contemporary self portrait and the role it plays in promoting oneself as a sexualized entity. in painting these figures (that were found on various gay internet dating/hook up sites) i wanted to debunk the assumed veil of privacy the internet provides and compare the amount of contrivance in these poses to that of a painted image.

so if your a beautiful gay man with naked photos of yourself on the internet, watch out!... or just make it easier on the both of us and send them my way ;)
